Improve Your SEO With These 5 Tips:

1. The Image ALT Tag

This is a big one. With so many bloggers using images in their content, the use of the image ALT tag is a must. Search engines only read and recognize text..not images. Yes, they know it’s some sort of image, but unless we specifically tell it what that image is and what it’s about through text..the search engine has no idea. Adding a descriptive keyword phrase to your images is a simple way to get a little more SEO boost out of your images.

See this post on how to add alt tags to images for a step by step guide on how to implement this strategy.

2. Optimize Your Images For Speed And Mobile

As long as we are on the subject of images, another simple thing you can do to improve your on site SEO is to optimize your images. Many of the major search engines take your site’s load time into consideration when determining rankings. If you have large images that are not properly optimized, your site will load slow and cost you not only viewers, but possibly rankings as well.

See this post on how to optimize images for complete instructions on how to do this.

3. Title and Keywords

Make sure you use the keyword you want to rank for in the title of your article. Google in particular places a great deal of weight on the title tag. Make sure to repeat your keyword a few times throughout the article, but not so much that it impairs the natural “flow” of reading for your viewer. Use a good keyword research tool to come up with ideas, and try to use keyword phrases or long-tail keywords instead of just one word.

4. Anchor Text

What is anchor text? Simply put it is when you take your keyword phrase and turn it into a clickable link. When other websites link to your content, it is most likely one of these anchor text phrases that will be highlighted on their site. There are many examples of this strategy throughout this post. Where I have added related posts, I have combined an anchor text strategy as well as an internal linking strategy which will be covered in the next step.

5. Link Building

There has been lot’s of attention paid to link building over the years, and with good reason. It works. But a word of warning..you can’t just get links from anywhere, they have to be links to and from content that is related to your own. Notice I included the word “to” in that sentence.

Here’s why.

A few years ago, if we wanted to link out to a different website we often would use the “nofollow” tag on that link telling the search engines we did not want it to be included as part of our site crawl. Now days, I have found some benefit in linking out to articles without using the “nofollow” tag as long as the article I am linking to has content relevant to mine.

It is still important to use the “nofollow” tag on affiliate links or to lead capture pages, as the content is typically thin and the bounce rate on those types of pages can be high.

You can use this attribute in your links by adding rel=”nofollow” to the end of your html link structure.

Internal Link Structure:

Google loves links. When you write a blog post or article, try to include links to different posts on your site. This is internal linking and not only does Google like it, but your readers will enjoy the link to related content as well. The keyword there is RELATED. Link related content using a good keyword phrase..as I have done in various parts of this post. Use the widget areas on a WordPress platform to include recent posts, popular posts, and category links.

The best method (and safest) of link building is the links you get from natural sharing. Encourage your readers to share your content on social media platforms and to leave you comments. Google loves to see engagement!

Developing a basic SEO strategy for your blog or website does not have to be complicated. I try to implement the 5 steps outlined above in every post I write. It eventually just becomes a habit and part of the content producing process.
